According to police, a man was attacked by a gator outside of a Florida hotel after misidentifying the reptile for a dog.

The strange catastrophe took place around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when the guy walked outside the Warm Mineral Springs Motel in North Port and noticed a shadowy shape scooting around in some bushes, according to WFLA, citing the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

When the gator charged toward him, the guy didn’t move because he mistook it for a dog on a long leash.

The alligator then bit his leg and tore off a piece of his muscle tissue, according to deputies.
