The civil rights leader passed on Thursday at the age of 99, but her photos have become legendary for a new generation of Black women and men.

Although no cause of death was disclosed, her granddaughter Tya Young, told the source that Richardson had not been ill.

Richardson, a Howard University graduate, is recognized for her unwavering tenacity in the battle for racial equality, having been seen shoving away a National Guardsman’s rifle during the civil rights movement in Cambridge, Maryland, in the 1960s.

According to the Associated Press, Richardson “was the first woman to lead a prolonged grassroots civil rights movement outside the Deep South.” Her involvement in creating and directing the Cambridge Movement in Maryland, where she grew up, was momentous.
