A man is accused of decapitating and dismembering a southern Indiana woman in a “gruesome” crime, according to law enforcement.
According to detectives, the accused also set fire to the woman’s apartment in an attempt to conceal the horrific crime.
Clarksville police described the crime as “brutal and heinous,” noting that it was one of the worst in the department’s history, according to WISH.
“32 years as a police officer and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Clarksville Police Department Chief Mark Palmer, told the outlet.
“Yesterday’s crime scene, in my 23 years, is probably one of the most horrific that we’ve been involved in,” said Maj. Joel DeMoss. “As a law enforcement officer, we want to see justice and to whatever that extent that is, especially when you see a brutal crime scene like that and the viciousness of it.”
Officers were dispatched to an apartment at 8 a.m. on Tuesday due to reports of a fire. When investigators arrived on the scene, they discovered the body of a woman. Melody Gambetty, 67, has been identified as the victim.
Police say Gambetty and Williams did not know each other and presume her death was the result of a poorly planned robbery or home invasion, according to WDRB.
Things missing from Gambetty’s residence were also discovered at the suspect’s apartment, according to law enforcement.
Police also discovered some of Gambetty’s body parts in a suitcase. Williams, 36, is now facing murder, arson, and theft charges, reported WLKY.
