Following a public outcry after a senior citizen was mistaken for dead by personnel at an assisted living facility and sent to the morgue, Shanghai authorities fired or reprimanded at least 6 people, according to SCMP.

The district government of Putuo confirmed the error and announced an investigation. It later said four officials, a care home director, and a doctor had been fired or reprimanded.

“The nursing home is such a mess. They sent a living person on a hearse and said they were dead. The undertaker staff said they were still moving … It is irresponsible, really irresponsible,” a person near the scene says, according to CNN.

The district government said the man was stable on Monday. The blunder triggered a new wave of terror for many Shanghai residents who have been subjected to strict lockdowns since March 28, as the local government has faced mounting criticism for its handling of the Omicron crisis.
