After human remains were discovered Wednesday, state and local officials in Martin County are continuing to search a vast area of the Hungryland Wildlife Preserve.

Investigators said the remains were discovered near a “gator-infested canal bank” about 3 miles within the park, according to a post on the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

On Thursday, detectives and officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were on the scene.

Sheriff William Snyder stated that a biologist from the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission was starting to work in the preserve Wednesday morning when they noticed what they assumed was an alligator with a person’s arm.

Law enforcement from the Commission was called to the scene and spent the bulk of the day searching for the remains. By the middle of the night, they had located the arm and had contacted the sheriff’s office.

On Thursday, detectives discovered what emerged to be additional human remains.

Officials reported finding two body parts in the last 24 hours, one of which was discovered in the mouth of an alligator.

Law enforcement is tasked with ascertaining whether the remains belong to the same person while searching a vast area for evidence.

The dive team from Martin County Fire Rescue was searching the waters for any additional human remains.

A sniper from the sheriff’s office was on the scene to safeguard the divers from alligators while they went looking.

Cadaver dogs, as well as deputies on ATVs and a helicopter, have been searching the grounds.
