If It Ain't One Thing, It's Another: Bird Flu Found In Indiana, Maine and New York Poultry Farms

Officials in Maine announced Sunday that avian influenza had been discovered for the first time, the latest in a series of cases across the country.

They stressed that there is no risk to human health from the virus.

It was discovered in a noncommercial backyard “non-poultry” flock in Suffolk County, on Long Island, on Saturday.  It has been decided to euthanize the flock and quarantine the premises.

According to the Associated Press, the highly pathogenic strain of influenza has been discovered in at least four commercial poultry farms in Indiana, with two of them having been discovered just last week.

Health officials have stated that they are purging 15,200 birds at the most recent farm in order to prevent the disease from spreading.

Avian influenza (bird flu) occurs naturally in wild aquatic birds all over the world and has the potential to spread to domestic poultry as well as other bird and animal species, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.
