Dejoira Philips, a former Atlanta Police officer, accepted her guilty plea and apologized to Lisa Williams, the lady whose arm had to be amputated after Phillips raced through a red light and drove into her in 2018, according to 11Alive.
“I’m sincerely sorry for what happened,” Phillips said. “It was a complete accident, never meant to happen.”
Phillips will evade a prison sentence because she reached a plea deal with prosecutors. She was sentenced to ten years of probation and will be barred from working as an officer for the next five years.
She also has to volunteer for at least 100 hours at amputee support groups and also pay $200 a month to the victim.
Williams’ left arm had to be amputated after Phillips ran a red light and crashed into Williams.
La’Tasha Givens, a reporter with 11Alive spoke with Williams and her attorneys after the hearing.
“Without no sirens, without no flashing lights, I didn’t even have a chance to avoid this accident. I have a permanent sentence made, that is the loss of my arm, that will never come back that has traumatically changed my life.”
The City of Atlanta paid Williams $500,000 in damages.
