Isimemen Etute has been booked on a second-degree murder charge and is being detained in the Montgomery County Jail without bond. He is also facing driving charges for speeding and failing to stop or yield.

On the night of June 1, police were called  for a welfare check and discovered a man lifeless; the death was declared a murder by investigators. Jerry Smith, 40, of Blacksburg, has been named as the victim. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Authorities believe the perpetrator and victim knew one another, but there is no information about their connection or possible motivation.

According to Virginia Tech Police, Etute is a freshman who has been dismissed from the institution and the football team.
