A New Mexico motorist had a request for arriving police officers after being engaged in an apparent DUI crash that killed another driver and left her own passenger screaming in agony.

According to a video obtained by KRQE-TV in Albuquerque of the May incident, suspect Jennifer Munoz, 26, requested responding officers, “Can I just smoke a cigarette?”

On an early May morning, Munoz was driving 89 mph in a 35 mph zone on Unser and Tower, blew a red light, and slammed into the mother of 4, Janelle Katesigwa, 41, who was driving to work at a neighborhood McDonald’s.

“I would not do that right now,” the officer told Munoz. “Please,” Munoz asked.

Munoz, according to police, smelled like he had been drinking. She acknowledged to having a couple of shots when they arrived on the scene. Munoz allegedly attempted to flee on foot before police arrived, according to witnesses.

Her blood was drawn five hours after the accident. Even yet, the blood alcohol level was nearly double the legal limit.

Munoz was charged with vehicular homicide and will be held in custody until his case goes to trial. She has three speeding fines on her record, according to the online. If convicted, she may face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
