According to the Houston Police Department, the suspect accused of gunning down a 9-year-old girl and wounding her mother in the Heights on Monday evening has been arrested.

Jeremiah Jones, 22, was apprehended by HPD SWAT and Tactical officers in a parking area in the 22300 block of Imperial Valley Drive on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Around 9:54 p.m., officers received reports of a shooting at 404 Oxford Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a domestic dispute between a man and a woman.

The child, identified as Khylie Sorrells by her mother Brittany Sorrells, was shot in the head, according to authorities. According to HPD, Brittany was shot in the shoulder. Both victims were taken to a hospital, where Khylie was declared dead, according to police.

Sorrells had not seen Jones within several weeks and had decided to end her relationship with the suspect 2 months ago, according to reports.

According to court documents, Sorrells was in bed with Khylie and her other children, ages 1 and 7, watching movies when Jones popped up at her apartment demanding that she give him a tv he believed was his.

According to court documents, he then tore the television off the wall. Sorrells stated Jones started demanding her mobile and started accusing her of seeing another man. Sorrells stated that she handed Jones her mobile and he proceeded to the back bedroom. According to court papers, she then suddenly heard gunshots and saw Jones exit the bedroom.

According to HPD Lt. Horelica, Jones went into the room where the 9-year-old was and “executed” the child on purpose.

Investigators said the other kids, who are not related to the accused person, were not injured or killed and were placed with family and friends.

“Since that relationship had ended between them, he was upset about it,” Lt. Horelica said.

“I want our citizens to know we cannot and will not tolerate violence in our city, especially involving our young people,” Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in a statement Tuesday.

Sorrells has granted KPRC 2 permission to share a GoFundMe page she set up to assist with funeral expenses.
