Florida Officer Cleared After Shooting Protestor LaToya Ratlieff In The Eye With Rubber Bullet

LaToya Ratlieff, a South Florida woman who was shot in the face by a foam bullet during a May 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstration in Fort Lauderdale, is disappointed by the decision that exonerates the officer.

Detective Eliezer Ramos was cleared of any wrongdoing, and Ratlieff returned to the scene where she was taking part in a demonstration in protest against police violence.

The internal affairs investigation determined that Det. Ramos was targeting another protester who was trying to pick up a tear gas canister that was still spewing gas.

Since the officer was not targeting Ratlieff, but a person he was justified in shooting, no departmental policy was violated, Police Chief Patrick Lynn, of Fort Lauderdale, said.
