The Avery County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Sunday that a South Carolina caretaker has been charged with her murder after a North Carolina woman was discovered encased in concrete in a home’s basement.

The Avery County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with NC SBI, arrested Elizabeth Carserino, also known as Elizabeth Freeman, on Saturday.

Lynn Keene, 70, of Linville Falls, was discovered ‘entombed’ in concrete in her basement after being reported missing by relatives a week prior.

The Avery Detectives then obtained a search warrant for Lynn Keene’s home, which they searched with the help of the NC SBI and their crime scene team.

During the search, detectives and SBI agents discovered human remains in the basement, encased in concrete. An autopsy was conducted on the human remains discovered, and it was assessed that the remains were those of Keene based on dental records. The autopsy also revealed that Keene died as a result of a homicide rather than natural factors.

Investigators quickly identified Elizabeth Carserino, Keene’s live-in caretaker, as a prime suspect, and a search was launched. She already was wanted for larceny of a vehicle, theft of financial cards, and identity fraud.

Carserino is being heldjailed on a $1.625 million secured bond in Avery County.
