Drug cartel members were caught on video shooting dead a group of mourners and cleaning up the scene before leaving behind a bag full of brains.
It happened on Sunday outside of the funeral service for the mother of an alleged Jalisco cartel contract killer who had been fighting bloody turf war with rival gangs in Michoacan, where the gruesome attack took place.
Footage taken by a resident of San Jose de Gracia shows bursts of gunfire and smoke covering the scene of the death and destruction.
Victims’ bodies had been cleaned up and the sidewalk washed before prosecutors could determine how many people were killed in the attack on Monday.
Only a bag of brains and shell casings were found at the scene of the massacre by investigators.
An official with the Michoacan state’s prosecutor’s office said that gang members had gathered at Alejandro’s funeral in search of the hitman.
As far as we know, the hitman died at the scene, according to State Prosecutor Adrián Lopez Solis.
There were three cops on duty at the town hall down the block when the attack occurred, he said, and they failed to respond because “they didn’t have sufficient force” to intervene.
Cartel gunmen have carried out numerous targeted killings at funerals in Mexico, killing members of rival gangs in the process.
Anguiano, mayor of the township that includes San Jose de Gracia, said that before Sunday’s attack, a large convoy of vehicles entered from Jalisco state, but local police were unable to intervene.
