The 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will be replaced on Saturday with 988, an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 crisis treatment.

The lifeline, which also connects to the Veterans Crisis Line, is the result of a three-year collaborative effort by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and Veterans Affairs (VA) to make crisis care more accessible to individuals in need.

This project is part of President Biden’s comprehensive approach for addressing our nation’s mental health epidemic, and it has been selected as a key priority at HHS by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

Since January 2021, the Biden-Harris Administration has made significant investments to facilitate the 988 transition, including a $432 million commitment to expand crisis center capabilities and guarantee that all Americans have direct connections to aid during mental health emergencies.
