A young Black man repeatedly told police they had the incorrect suspect before he was jailed for crimes committed by an older white man with the same name.

The 8 News Now I-Team secured and released the first video of Shane Lee Brown’s unjust arrest. Brown, now 25, spent six days in two Nevada jails due to deputies’ mistakes.

Henderson police searched Brown’s first and last name in a records log during a traffic stop on Jan. 8, 2020 and found a “Shane Brown” who had evaded court and had a gun possession warrant.

Shane Neal Brown, 51, a bearded Caucasian male, was wanted on a no-bail warrant.

Brown repeatedly told officers his name. “My Social’s in there, too,” Brown remarked.

Brown couldn’t convince officers he wasn’t the culprit and was jailed for two days. Later, he was taken to a Clark County detention center before court.

Judge Joe Hardy granted the younger Brown’s release after a public defender pointed out that the Shane Brown in jail did not have the same Identification number or age as the one named in the warrant.

The wrongly held Brown is seeking at least $50,000 in damages, alleging human rights breaches, false imprisonment, negligence, and more.
