A white officer in a North Carolina city is said to have been fired after refusing a black resident’s request to be called by her doctoral title throughout a publicized conference.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Tony Collins, a member of the Greensboro Zoning Commission, was dismissed by the City Council this week following a tense exchange with Carrie Rosario, an associate professor at UNC-Greensboro.

City Councilwoman Sharon Hightower said, “It was a very disrespectful exchange between an important commissioner and a public citizen,.”

The incident happened at the end of a four-hour Zoning Commission conference call, during which Rosario articulated her reservations about a construction project around her house
