A man from South Carolina was found guilty on Tuesday of kidnapping and murdering a 21-year-old college student who mistook his vehicle for her Uber ride back in 2019.

Nathaniel Rowland was found guilty by a jury on Tuesday afternoon, and Judge Clifton Newman delivered the verdict about 30 minutes later. In doing so, he imposed the greatest penalty allowed by law on Rowland.

Rowland told the judge before his sentencing that, “I know I’m innocent but I guess what I know and what I think really doesn’t matter.”

On March 29, 2019, Josephson was out with friends in Columbia’s Five Points area when she decided to get an Uber to get home, according to police and prosecutors. Prosecutors claim she got into a car that wasn’t her Uber by accident. She was discovered dead in a field in Clarendon County, SC, some 70 miles from Columbia, hours later.

According to prosecutors, Josephson got into Rowland’s car and killed her before transporting her to that secluded location.
