Scammers Lead to State Department Shutting Down Online Passport Application System

The United States State Department has temporarily suspended its online appointment platform for passport applicants, claiming that scammers arranged dates and then resold them to desperate travelers for thousands of dollars.

Scammers reportedly utilized bots to make appointments, which were then sold on online forums such as Facebook groups such as ‘US Passports and Visas,’ according to SFGate. The schemes were initially brought to the attention of the State Department in June.

The online system allowed travelers to make last-minute appointments, that were generally reserved for travelers in life-or-death situations.

The only method to schedule an appointment right now, according to the State Department, is to phone the National Passport Information Center on a weekday.
