Two security guards in South Carolina have been charged for allegedly trying to poison their boss. The two men, Andrew Doty, 47, and Hunter Howard, 30, were charged Friday with tampering with a human drug product or food item with the intent to cause bodily harm to a person.

The two security guards had been assigned to the Sea Island community of Hilton Head, which is known as a vacation spot due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its golf courses.

The men are accused of putting eye drops into the personal coffee maker of their security supervisor. Officials stated that another employee was able to intervene and prevent the supervisor from drinking any of the coffee.

According to Poison Control, an ingredient commonly found in eye drops can cause sleepiness, low blood pressure, and a frighteningly slow heart rate if used in large quantities or consumed, according to the organization. It is possible that the drops will cause serious toxicity or even death if taken by mouth.

According to the Rock Hill Herald, a South Carolina woman was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2020 for putting eye drops in her husband’s drink.  Eventually, he passed away.

Tampering is a felony, and both security officers could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charge.

Doty and Howard were each released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
