Police say a legally armed woman in a Des Moines, Iowa, grocery store shot a woman who attacked her.

“This was something spontaneous that unfortunately happened in that grocery store where a lot of people were grocery shopping this morning,” said Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said of the Sunday incident, according to KCCI. 

Police say Kapri Lashawn Francis, 30, attacked the woman without provocation at 10 a.m. The unidentified woman shot Francis legally.

After the bullet ricocheted, it hit a customer in the foot.

Francis was charged with assault after being treated at a hospital. After interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, police said the victim shot in self-defense.

Many Americans are on edge after a series of mass shootings, including one at a Buffalo grocery store in May.
