Crowds battled with policemen and looted or torched retail malls in South Africa on Tuesday, with many reported dead or injured as resentment over former President Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment erupted into the worst unrest in years.

Protests in the aftermath of Zuma’s incarceration last week erupted into looting and a broader outpouring of rage about inequality that remains 27 years after apartheid’s demise.

Poverty has been compounded by stringent social and economic constraints intended at limiting COVID-19 transmission. Security authorities said the government was attempting to stop the violence and theft, which had extended from Zuma’s home in KwaZulu-Natal region to Gauteng province, which surrounds the country’s largest metropolis, Johannesburg.
