A teacher at a $55,000-per-year New York City private school who showed first graders cartoons about masturbation during sex-ed classes and told them they couldn’t be hugged ‘without consent’ has resigned, according to reports.
According to an email from Jim Best, the head of school at Dalton School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Justine Ang Fonte will not return next year.
Parents were outraged by the controversial classes, but Best’s email unveiling Fonte’s resignation continued to insist that the school remained “firmly behind the program and those who teach it.”
‘Throughout her tenure at Dalton, Justine Ang Fonte has helped to develop an exemplary K-12 Health and Wellness program,’ Best wrote in the message, which was seen by the New York Post on Friday.
‘Dalton — our faculty, staff, administration, and trustees — continue to stand firmly behind this program and those who teach it.
‘At faculty and staff meetings this week, Justine announced her decision to leave Dalton to focus on her work as an independent Health Educator. She has been working toward this goal for over a year. We support Justine’s aspirations and look forward to honoring her accomplishments as the academic year comes to a close.’
The few who made complaints to school administrators were told they had misunderstood the lessons, according to a report published by the Post earlier this year.
