The United States men’s basketball team lost their Olympic opener on Sunday, falling 83-76 to a really talented France team in a back-and-forth game. It was the team’s first Olympic loss since 2004. The Americans finished third at the Athens Games with three losses and a bronze medal.
The Americans are a haphazardly assembled team. A handful of top players elected to rest rather than comply with Japan’s COVID rules in order to prepare for the NBA season. Due to COVID and an injury, two players were sidelined.
On Wednesday, the United States will face Iran in an attempt to reclaim its footing. On Saturday, they meet the Czech Republic in the final match of their group. On Wednesday, France will face the Czech Republic, and on Saturday, Iran.
