Carolyn Smith discussed her reaction to her son slapping comedian Chris Rock during the awards show over a joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith in an interview with 6ABC.

Before the winner was announced, Will Smith walked up to the stage and smacked Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her battle with hair loss.

The famous actor, who was born and bred in West Philadelphia and always appeared calm and collected, had a complete meltdown.

Smith’s mother, too, was taken aback.

“He is a very even, people person. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime… I’ve never seen him do that,” Carolyn stated regarding the incident.

Will’s family does not genuinely think the situation should characterize him, according to his sister Ellen Smith, who told the news station, “I’ve had conversations with him, and it really kind of broke my heart listening to the things he’s said he had to go through to get to where he is.”

While the rest of the world has differing viewpoints, this family is unconcerned. They are proud of the Philadelphia actor and what he has become, and they are confident that he will make the right decisions in the future.

“I am proud of him being him,” Carolyn Smith said.
