According to the child’s grandmother, a 2-year-old boy mistakenly shot and killed his father in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Sunday night.

Police said they were called  about a shooting at a home on West Fifth Avenue shortly after 8:45 p.m. on Sunday. Officers reported finding Markovia Lashawn Durham, 29, deceased from a gunshot wound when they arrived.

The shooting occurred while the child and his parents were visiting their grandmother.

According to the child’s grandmother, the child discovered a gun and began to play with it, thinking it was a toy. She stated he then fired the weapon by accident, hitting his father, Durham.

When the shot went off, she said the boy dropped the gun and ran outside.

The boy’s involvement has yet to be confirmed by police, who say the investigation is still ongoing.
