A college basketball player from Wingate University in North Carolina was killed after being hit by a train near campus on Tuesday night, according to campus officials.
Kyle Honore, a freshman at Wingate, was killed by a train on Tuesday around 10:45 p.m. at the North Camden Street train crossing near the university entrance. According to the Wingate Police Department, officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel “located a young male who had been struck by an eastbound train.”
“The young man succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital,” police said.
The train was not at the scene when authorities arrived, according to Queen City News, and the train operator was unaware that anyone had been struck. Somebody else near the campus phoned after seeing Honore’s body on the railroad tracks, according to reports.
It is unknown at this time how Honore was struck, and police have stated that the incident is still being investigated.
“The Wingate Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the friends, family and Wingate University classmates impacted by this incident,” police said.
Honore joined the Wingate Bulldogs basketball team recently. He was born in Dumfries, Virginia, and attended Potomac High School, where he played all 4 seasons on the basketball team coached by his father, Keith Honore.
