According to police, a 4-year-old girl got a hold of an unattended gun inside a residence and accidentally shot herself in the hip. Shamira Houston, the girl’s mother, is accused of attempting to remove the gun and clean up the scene. However, another child is said to have told investigators what occurred.

Jesse Briggs, 21, is accused of second-degree child abuse and felony firearm possession. Houston has been accused of tampering with evidence.

“It’s tragic for all parties. It’s tragic for mom, dad, child — because when this is done and judicial process is over, we still have a baby that was shot,” said interim Detroit police chief James White.

Police were called to Children’s Hospital of Michigan on Tuesday after a 4-year-old girl arrived with a bullet wound to her stomach.

The small child was initially reportedly shot in a park on Detroit’s east side, but the investigation actually led detectives to the family’s home.
