Five people were killed when a guy drove his car at fast speed into a large group of pedestrians in the northeast Chinese city of Dalian because he was agitated about a large investment and hoped to “take revenge on society.”

According to the South China Morning Post, a suspect named Liu, 32, has been detained.

Liu, a hairdresser, drove through a red light and sped up to 108km/h (67mph) in seconds before colliding with the pedestrian crossings.

Four people were killed on the spot, and a fifth passed away later in the hospital. According to police, five other people were injured in the crash.

On Sunday, Qu Bo, Dalian’s deputy police chief, announced that the offender had been arrested on suspicion of “endangering public security.” He could face the death penalty if found guilty.

“The suspect was unable to accept his personal investment failure and lost confidence in life, so he took revenge on society,” Qu stated this without going into detail about the nature of the failed investment. (Numerous reports say the investment was bitcoin.)

It went on to say that road rage incidents are frequent in China. Last July, a 52-year-old bus driver purposefully proceeded to drive his automobile off the road and into a reservoir in southern China, killing himself and 20 commuters.
