Video Shows Tense Moments After SAPD Officers Fatally Shoot Man Allegedly Reaching for Gun in Waistband

According to SAPD Chief William McManus, three San Antonio police officers shot and killed a 27-year-old man Monday on the city’s west side.

On Monday, just before 4 p.m., the incident occurred near North Elmendorf and Carter Street, according to KENS5.

McManus stated that the officers were on regular patrol when they identified a man from two outstanding felony arrest warrants; one for assault on an officer and another for firearm possession.

Police tried to stop the man, but McManus says that he ran away.

McManus says that at some point during the chase, the man reached for a gun in his pants. Authorities found a gun in the man’s possession after he was shot.

Kevin Johnson, who died, was Jasmine Johnson’s brother. “He is not a bad person, so there’s no reason why this should’ve happened,” she told the outlet.

She stated that her brother had mental health problems, but that he had stopped committing crimes and “changed his whole life.”

McManus, who had not assessed the body camera footage when he briefed reporters Monday, would not discuss the shooting in detail.  He would not say the number of shots that were fired or where the man was shot.

The officers have served the department for four, five, and sixteen years, respectively. Each was placed on administrative leave by McManus.

Neighbors, friends, and family gathered Monday afternoon at the shooting site. Following a period of controlled conflict, bystanders started to throw objects and cursing officers.
