When two burglars broke into his Oak Park home, a Ventura County homeowner ‘beat the brakes off’ one and detained the other until the cops arrived.

A car with a driver was parked in front of the resident’s house on April 1. He confronted one of the intruders and struck him before they fled to the waiting vehicle.

The resident detained a second burglar, Alexis Provoste Aranguiz, until sheriff’s deputies arrived and apprehended him. The driver and other burglar remain at large.

Aranguiz, from Chile, is suspected of being part of a South American Theft Group. Investigators say they’re part of the recent wave of “crime tourism” in which South American thieves target California homes. A similar crime was recently committed in Camarillo by four men.

Aranguiz is now charged with first-degree residential burglary and conspiracy, both of which are felonies.

In court on Tuesday, he pleaded not guilty and is still in jail on $150,000 bail.
