A 10-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with a Memorial Day shooting that killed one woman.

Local Florida station, WESH did not identify the 10-year-old girl because of her age. She was charged with second-degree murder and taken into custody on Tuesday.

According to police, two women were literally fighting in the courtyard area between dwellings at the Windsor Cove Apartments on Mercy Drive shortly before midnight on May 30.

Lakrisha S. Isaac, 31, and Lashun Denise Rodgers, 41, were identified as the women.

Witnesses say Isaac punched Rodgers during a cookout at their apartment building. The woman retaliated by punching Isaac in the face.

Witnesses claim Isaac “took off her backpack and gave it up” to her 10-year-old daughter at some point.

Witnesses say they saw the girl “rummaging through the backpack” and heard a gunshot as the two women continued to fight. Lushun Rodgers, the victim, collapsed to the ground with a “gunshot wound to the head.”

“You shouldn’t have messed with my mother!” Isaac’s daughter yelled, according to deputies. The mother and daughter were detained at the time.

Isaac was arrested and charged with a variety of offenses, including improper firearm storage and manslaughter by culpable negligence.

It’s unclear why authorities chose to charge the 10-year-old in this case, or what will happen to her next.

State Attorney Monique Worrell called the case one of the most tragic she’s seen in her career on Tuesday.
