Prosecutors said a Georgia man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murder in a 2020 incident in which he was accused of fatally shooting another man and then turning the firearm on himself.
Superior Court Judge Henry Thompson sentenced Elias Bustamente, 24, on Monday, according to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.
In July, Bustamente was found guilty of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and two weapons counts.
The charges originate from a shooting that took place in the early morning hours of July 5, 2020, at a residence on Hawthorne Circle in Smyrna, near Fox Creek Golf Course.
During an argument around 3 a.m., Bustamente was accused of pointing a Glock 23 pistol at Michael Arreola. According to the warrant, despite Arreola’s “pleading with (Bustamente) to put down the firearm,” Bustamente shot him 3 times — twice in the chest and once in his leg.

According to police, Bustamente then pointed the firearm at his own noggin and tried to commit suicide. But he failed, shooting himself in the eye.
Prosecutors allege Bustamente was “highly intoxicated” at the time the incident occurred.
