College Basketball Star Killed, 8 Other Injured in NYC Shooting

Houston Baptist men’s basketball player Darius Lee was fatally shot on Monday while attending a gathering in New York, according to the university.

He was only 21 years old at the time.

According to the NYPD, the shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. at what did appear to be a barbeque in Harlem.

When police officers arrived on the scene after receiving reports of gunshots, they discovered 9 people — seven men and two women — with bullet wounds.

Lee, who was identified as one of the seven injured males by Houston Baptist, was shuttled to a local hospital after being hit in the chest by a bullet. According to law enforcement officers, he was pronounced dead there.

Police say a gun was retrieved at the scene of the shooting, but no other info about the incident has been published. According to police officers, no arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing.

On Monday, Houston Baptist mourned Lee’s death, with men’s basketball head coach Ron Cottrell describing the 6-foot-6, 230-pound wing as “a remarkable young man.”

Last season, Lee was Houston Baptist’s best player, averaging 18.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. According to the school, the rising senior was scheduled to graduate in December.
