Detroit mom arrested after child found dead in basement freezer
Neighbors say the 3-year-old boy discovered dead in a freezer in Detroit early Friday morning was blind, and the boy ‘s relatives said Child Protective Services had already been called 13 times this year.
The young boy, whose name neighbors and friends’ members confirm to Detroit’s FOX 2 is Chase, was discovered dead in a freezer within the family’s residence.
Detroit Police Chief James White stated the small boy was rotting away when he was discovered and praised the officers were the first to respond for acting on a gut feeling.
Chase was blind and had other impairments, according to nearest neighbors, but they were not listed.
“She (the mother) couldn’t deal with it, and we all said give him to us if you can’t deal with it,” a family memeber said.
Relatives stated that CPS was called at least 13 times this year, but they were incapable of making any progress and were not permitted inside of the residence.
White held a press conference Friday afternoon and credited the first two officers to arrive at the home for following their instinct.
“The discovery would not be possible without the officers’ intuition. They recognized there was something not right in the way the occupant was communicating with them,” White said.
After speaking with occupants in the house, White stated that they attempted to turn the officers away. However, they trusted their instincts and contacted a supervisor as well as Child Protective Services (CPS).

White said the boy’s body was discovered decomposing in the home’s basement, inside a freezer.
According to neighbors, the boy hasn’t been seen since last March.
Police confirmed that the 30-year-old woman arrested is the child’s mother, who has not been identified.
Neighbors offered to assist, but the mother refused. “She had her kids taken away from her…before and got them back,” the relative said.
